Art and Social Practice is relatively a new term which is still evolving in the contemporary art world, both in theory and practice. The aim of this project is to create a broader understanding of the subject through various definitions collected from the artists practicing in this field. This will also help finding the commonalities and the differences of our understanding of Art and Social practice, especially for the artists working in different social contexts and geographic locations.
Historically, since modernism, artistic terms were often coined and formulated in the west and exported to other parts of the world as dominant cultural practices. While these terms have their relevance in the west specific to a time or social reality, they often become empty when adopted in a totally different context without realizing their importance and social relevance.
The aim of this project is to create a link between different ways of articulating Art and Social Practice to make a dialogical understanding rather than a reductive singular definition in the history of art.
These collected definitions will eventually be collated into a book. Both this site and the book could be a reference point for individual artists as well as art institutions across the world.
